When you always exercise alone, it may be tempting to pass up your workout due to any excuse you can come up with that day.

Working out with a friend or partner adds some accountability to your life. Plus, you may find you enjoy exercise more when you don't do it all by yourself.

With the new year right around the corner we want to make sure you don't just make another New Year's Resolution you don't keep. We want you to finally set that workout goal and keep it. Whether it be to loose weight, build muscle or just overall health we want you to be successful.

We will be running our Bring A Friend to Group Fitness promotion again from December 17th - December 31st so that you can get someone in your life to start coming to class with you on a regular basis and become your accountability buddy for the year 2012! Whether it be a friend, family member or co-worker you know who could really help you reach your goals this year. Or even better yet, you could help them reach theirs!

A new beginning
I got into BODYCOMBAT™ while instructing boxing at a gym that had BODYPUMP™. My supervisor was a huge Les Mills fan and convinced the owner to purchase the BODYCOMBAT™ program. It took me time to feel ready to teach, and it’s made a huge difference in my life in such a positive way.

Passing on tradition
I was eight months pregnant when my husband died (in Iraq) on October 3, 2003 and my daughter Katie has just turned five. She loves to watch me practice when I’m getting ready for a new launch. She sits there and does her little kicks, it’s a lot of fun.

Positive impact
Exercise in general is great. We are mental, physical, emotional and spiritual, and all these parts of ourselves are connected. When we take good care of ourselves physically it affects us inside. When you are really hurting emotionally and feeling down on yourself, exercise releases endorphins and gives you the energy to deal with what’s going on. Besides the endorphins and the social aspect of going to the gym, you are taking care of your body - making it better and stronger. I am very much aware that taking better care of our bodies also translates to taking better care of our home, nation, and planet.

Anger management
I am a huge fan of BODYCOMBAT™ and BODYPUMP™. BODYCOMBAT™ has the anonymous henchman who’s attacking me and I’m pretending to beat him up, I feel it’s really empowering. Spending a few hours a week defeating your demons is such a positive way to feel like you can take things on in life. You can pretend the henchman is whoever you want – great anger management.

A life to be proud of
My husband Heath studied kickboxing, was athletic and self-sufficient and would want that for me. He would be happy that I was not only getting in shape, but learning something that can help me when he’s not around. We were both into martial arts; I think he would be very proud and amazed at my class and would be taking the class, if not teaching it.

Into the future
I think that no matter how stressful life gets, with different obstacles and stresses, we have to remember to be good to ourselves. Staying fit and active is a huge gift, it’s “me” time you deserve. You get so much out of doing a class. You give yourself the tools to get through anything no matter how difficult – to be five years down the road from losing my husband and to be happy, motivated and positive. Yes I miss him terribly, yes we were deeply in love, yes he was my best friend, but all these other parts of my life are what I’d rather focus on because they are so positive. Being an instructor, being fit and taking care of myself allows me to feel the way I do about myself. I can guarantee I wouldn’t be where I am today had it not been for BODYCOMBAT™.

We are so excited to offer you the new class format, Les Mills Body Combat, and we want to make sure that you are successful when you begin taking it.Therefore, we are offering a few technique classes to get you started before we officially launch the new classes.

Mirror, Mirror in the Gym

Researchers found that sedentary women exercising face-to-face with their reflections walk away feeling less energized, less relaxed, and less good about themselves than women who work out without mirrors to gaze at.

In the study, Kathleen A. Martin Ginis, an associate professor of kinesiology at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, analyzed the behavior of 58 college students after they spent 20 minutes on a stationary bicycle while wearing loose-fitting shorts, a T-shirt and running shoes. She says that the team was surprised to find that even women who were happy with their bodies were affected by the mirrors. "We thought that the effects would be strongest in women with the worst body image," she says, "but body image didn't matter."
 

So what should be done to motivate couch potatoes to get to the gym? Experienced exercisers, especially weight lifters, use the mirrors to check their form and position, so taking them down may not be an option.
Kimiecik piloted a 12-week personal fitness program at the YMCA designed specifically for beginners. They set aside a separate, mirror-less area for the newbies so that they wouldn't have to deal with the environment of the main gym.

"In the health and fitness industry we totally underestimate the effects of things like mirrors. People are very much intimidated," he says.

*New class format on Thursdays at 5:30pm! Step Intervals! What is it?
This class utilizes recovery intervals, high- and low-impact aerobics, step aerobics and resistance training. This class has something for everyone. If you're looking for a change in your regimen, step interval training is a step in the right direction. (1 Hour)
